Soft Machine : Third (Columbia, 1970)

SoftMachineThird

While it is difficult (impossible?) to choose one's favorite record - I do have my desert island list - one of my faves and most important records was Soft Machine Third. And this almost goes beyond just the amazing music. I remember seeing the ad for this LP in probably Downbeat in 1970 when it came out sitting waiting for my guitar lesson (my teacher was more a jazz guy) - and just being oddly attracted to the record. Sadly I did not actually buy the record for another few years. This also is chose as the record to write about that I have been recently listening in close succession to some of the live Soft Machine releases (mostly on Cuneiform) that have the various different lineups (quartet, quintet, septet) playing the works from that LP. It was quite an interesting take that the Softs kept approaching those pieces with live - I couldn't get this almost funky, metalish Hugh Hopper bass line on (I think it was live on BBC recording) Facelift. And then some of the horn parts integrated. Ok - enough - this record as they say is the shit (le merde?).

Harmonia : Harmonia Live 1974 (Grönland, 2007)

harmonia
