Kali Z. Fasteau : Animal Grace (Flying Note, 2010)

Des Alpes à Harlem, Kali Fasteau a fait entendre son Animal Grace : en trio en 2005 avec Bobby Few, Wayne Dockery et Steve McCraven ; en duo avec Louis Moholo deux ans plus tard.

Si l’échange avec Moholo n’est pas mis en valeur par la qualité de l’enregistrement, il profite de l’adhésion des coups secs du batteur aux excentricités sonores de Fasteau – trop emportée au piano, elle invente avec plus d’esprit au son d’autres instruments (flûte, mizmar, saxophone soprano, voix qu’elle transforme en machines, violon enfin). L’association est iconoclaste, voire étrange, autant qu’éclatante.

Plus tôt donc, dans le canton des Grisons, Fasteau donnait un concert à l’Uncool Festival en compagnie de Bobby Few (piano), Wayne Dockery (basse) et Steve McCraven (batterie). Classique d’apparence, le quartette bouscule les codes mais déçoit au son d’une mixture musicale d’un clinquant inapproprié : tombant quelques fois sur le son juste à force de tentatives nombreuses (flûte, voix et soprano encore), Fasteau doit faire avec le verbiage de partenaires hésitant entre pose free jazz et airs cabotins. Retour à New York alors : réécoute réparatrice de l’association Kali Z. Fasteau / Louis Moholo.

Noah Howard was an enthusiastic pioneer of the Avant-Jazz scene that started in the 1960s.  He brought a bayou warmth and swing from his hometown of New Orleans to his own blues-infused version of the new jazz.  He enjoyed life and people, and traveled and shared his music all over the world.
